My name is Jamie, I am an artist and illustrator based in Fife where I live with my husband and young son.
I started painting young, as soon as I could hold a pencil, influenced by my grandad, himself an amateur painter.
In 2020 I lost my job as a library assistant due to ill health. Shortly after my grandad passed away. As a way to grieve and feel close to him I started painting again. I have one of his paintings hanging near my workspace to remind me of him as I work.
I am currently working toward my degree in illustration and am currently studying at Fife College.
Why The Kilted Zebra?
I call myself The Kilted Zebra because of my medical history. In 2016 I was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects connective tissue. Those of us with rare conditions are called medical zebras because we are often overlooked by doctors.
My condition influences my art and so I thought it appropriate to reference it in my name.
The kilt of course references my Scottish heritage.
